A recycling company in Boise, Idaho, has installed an ENERPAT AMB-L2014-250 Lid-Type Scrap Metal Baler to compress bulky mattress springs into dense, uniform bales. Built to keep pace with a throughput of 4–5 tons per hour, the 250-ton baler helps the customer cut material volume and handle springs more easily.
· Location: Boise, Idaho, USA
· Industry: Metal and scrap recycling
· Material: Mattress springs
· Equipment: ENERPAT AMB-L2014-250 Lid-Type Scrap Metal Baler
· Application: Compressing scrap mattress springs into dense bales to cut volume
The customer is a recycling company in Boise, Idaho, with a strong focus on environmentally responsible recycling. Its work centers on recovering valuable materials and keeping them out of landfill, and scrap metal is a core part of that operation. Mattress springs are one of the materials it handles, and they call for the right equipment to process efficiently.
Mattress springs are bulky and tangled, so loose material takes up a great deal of space. It is awkward to move, slow to load and quick to fill a yard or warehouse. The customer needed a reliable way to compress the springs and reduce their volume, so the material could be stored and handled more easily.
Throughput mattered just as much. The customer needed to process 4-5 tons of mattress springs per hour, so the baler had to be a heavy-duty machine built for continuous production, not occasional use. It also had to turn out consistent bales that are easy to stack and handle.
ENERPAT AMB-L2014-250 Lid-Type Scrap Metal Baler. It has a 250-ton press force, a 2000 × 1400 × 900 mm compression chamber, and two 22 kW motors. It produces bales of 500 × 500 mm.
The AMB-L series is a heavy-duty hydraulic baler designed for dense, hard-to-compress scrap, and mattress springs are among its supported materials. Several design features suit this application:
Lid-type loading: The lid covers the top of the compression chamber, which keeps loading simple for bulky, irregular material like tangled springs.
Shearing blades: Blades on the chamber and platen edges cut long pieces during the press stroke, which helps form a cleaner, more compact bale.
Durable construction: The frame is welded with a mortise-and-tenon structure for high load capacity and long service life. A wear-resistant lining protects the chamber inlet.
Reliable hydraulics: The system uses a one-piece cylinder with a chrome-plated piston rod and Hallite (UK) seals, a cartridge-type valve group for fast cycle speed, and a Siemens motor for stable, low-vibration operation.
Built for continuous duty: An industrial chiller keeps hydraulic oil temperature under control, supporting multi-shift operation at the customer’s target throughput.
Simple, safe control: A Siemens or Schneider PLC with a touchscreen monitors cycle time, current and oil temperature. The CE-certified safety system includes an emergency stop, an oil-temperature alarm, overload protection and a lockable maintenance mode.
The baler also cold-presses material without binders, so the metal’s properties are unchanged.
1. Feeding: Material is loaded into the compression chamber, typically by forklift or an unloading device.
2. Hydraulic compression: The hydraulic system compresses the springs into compact bales.
3. Automatic ejection: A hydraulic cylinder pushes the finished bale out through a small door.
The machine processes scrap mattress springs at 4–5 tons per hour, compressing them into uniform 500 × 500 mm bales.
The AMB-L series also handles other dense scrap, including steel coils, scrap copper, scrap stainless steel, aluminum profiles, household appliance casings, oil filters and aluminum cans. This leaves the customer room to add other materials later.
The AMB-L2014-250 is now installed in Boise and compresses mattress springs into uniform bales at 4–5 tons per hour. A bulky, tangled material has become compact, dense bales that are easier to stack, store and handle. The lid design keeps loading straightforward, and the PLC controls keep day-to-day operation simple. With the cooling system and safety features built in, the baler is set up for sustained production.
ENERPAT’s AMB-L series covers press forces from 100 to 1,500 tons, so there is a configuration for most volumes and material types. We test customer-supplied samples free of charge before you order. Send us your material and monthly volume, and we will confirm the right model.
